Over the last year, we have seen inflation soar and house prices drop as interest rates climb. The war between Russia and Ukraine rages on. Earthquakes continue to shake countries, and fires burn up one area while hurricanes douse another. Banks are dissolving; trains derailing. Bullets zing snuffing out little lights in a moment. Hunger devours stomaches while persecution tries to strangle souls.
Headlines hauntingly tell of all that is crumbling. As wars, earthquakes, and storms batter the land and people in them, spiritual storms batter souls under every rooftop.
Division is everywhere.
Families shatter as sons and daughters turn against mothers and fathers and pledge allegiance to another set of ideologies and identities from which they were raised. Long-time standards of morality have been abandoned, replaced with deceptive “freedom of choice,” as “Self” has been elevated to a position of “god.”
Politics have become more than just opposing platforms, rather a whole new kind of civil war.
All the world is shaking.
Do you feel it, too?
In many conversations, everywhere I turn, there is shaking.
Grief. Destruction. Loss.
Arrogance. Arguments. Apathy.
All contribute to the monumental shaking our world is enduring.
I see exhaustion cloaking faces as busyness consumes them. I see darkness dimming eyes as The Light is forgotten.
The atmosphere is heavy with chaos, confusion, conflict, and deception.
When our world is shaking, it can be hard not to crumble under the tremors.
It can be tempting to let our convictions soften so we don’t feel the shattering if we keep our standards solid.
Whatever can be shaken will be shaken
What can be shaken?
Governments. Banks. Businesses.
Relationships. Finances. Churches.
Anything not rooted firmly in Jesus can and will be shaken.
This includes our souls. When all the world is shaking, whatever is not of God will crumble.
And whatever is in Him will not.
Because the thing is, when all the world is shaking, God is not moved.
He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb. 13:8).
In Him, we have a rock-solid anchor to which we can tether our souls.
He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
Psalm 62:2
He is our everything.
The world is trembling, but we do not have to be greatly shaken.
We might get knocked off balance, but we have a Savior to catch us and set our feet on solid ground once again.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
Psalm 46:1-3, NIV
We are told we will have trials and troubles in this world, and we see the signs all around us: apostasy, violence, wars, natural disasters, and more.
The earth will give way and more hearts will grow cold as we move closer to our Savior’s return.
But we do not lose hope, for we have a firm foundation in Jesus Christ. When our souls are anchored in Him, we become unmoveable. We don’t have to get swept away by fear or taken under by conflicts.
We can stand firm because we look to the One who endured the cross for us. We fix our gaze on the One who rose from the grave for us.
We stand firm by following Him, trusting Him, and believing His promises:
He is faithful. He will never leave us. He will supply all our needs. He will return for us and all will be made whole!
And while we wait? We stand on the rock and shine His Light to the dark world. We share His gospel of grace and truth, His love and peace, His hope and joy. We are His witnesses and ambassadors, His salt and light. We do not let the light disappear, but we make it brighter as we await His glorious return.
The Light has not disappeared despite the crumbling. He has overcome.
The Light always wins.
